Terrie Epstein is the Coordinator of the Adolescent Social Studies Education Program. She has a B. A. and M. A. in history from Brandeis University and an M. A. and doctorate in education from Harvard University. Before coming to Hunter, she was a faculty member at the University of Denver, Boston College, University of Michigan and NYU.
Teaching
At Hunter, she teaches courses on secondary social studies methods. She is an affiliated faculty member of the CUNY Graduate Center's Ph.D. Program in Urban Education, where she teaches courses on urban pedagogy.
Research
Her current research is on the effects of racial identities and classroom pedagogies on children's and adolescents' interpretations of history; her book on the topic, Teaching National History for Social Justice is being published by Routledge Press. With colleagues Robert Cohen, Rachel Mattson and Diana Turk at NYU, she is co-editing a second book with Routledge Press, entitled Teaching American History: Dialogues among Historians, Educators and Students.
Her work has appeared in the American Educational Research Journal, Teachers College Record, Educational Researcher and Curriculum Inquiry, among other journals.
