Abigail M. Jewkes has taught young children in Head Start, church-based, and after-school programs in Boston, Chicago, and Michigan. Through her post-doctoral work in developmental psychology, she directed a federally funded longitudinal study of young children’s development and learning from preschool through the early elementary grades. She has worked with physicians around the country at Reach Out and Read, a national pediatric literacy promotion program based at hospitals, health centers, and physician’s offices. As an author of The Ounce Scale, an infant-toddler assessment, she has extensive experience training early childhood educators in observation-based assessment. She has also worked with infants and their families as part of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Developmental Follow-Up Clinic at the University of Michigan Hospital. She earned her Ph.D. in early childhood education from the University of Michigan and has a master’s degree in language and literacy from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
Teaching
Dr. Jewkes currently teaches graduate courses in early language and literacy development, along with the early childhood student teaching seminars. She also supervises early childhood students in their student teaching placements. Professor Jewkes’s previous university teaching includes undergraduate and graduate courses in early childhood assessment, curriculum, action research, and home-school connections.
Research
Professor Jewkes studies the influence of preschool of children’s language, literacy, numeracy, and self-regulation development; early contexts (home and child care) of language development; teaching beliefs and practices of early childhood educators; history of the early childhood field as it relates to current policies and practices.
