Do I need a computer?

Hunter and CUNY uses information technology extensively in learning and in student life. Hunter provides public access computers to its students:

Kiosks (called PACs) for quick checking of email, registration, DIG enquiries etc

Public computing labs with PCs and Macintoshes loaded with software for course and general use

so there is no absolute need to own a computer in order to get the most out of Hunter and CUNY. However many students find owning their own computer gives them more flexibility and control over what, how and when they learn.

How much power?

The systems at Hunter are not very demanding in terms of computer resources and power:

The e-mail system and the learning technology systems are Web-based and only require a fairly modern Web browser.

Podcasts are provided for some courses, which require you to be able to play MP3 files.

More use is being made of video recently. These are delivered as QuickTime, MP4 or Flash Video files and free software is available to play all of these kinds of video.

Almost every computer you can buy today will have enough power to play sound, videos and of course run the Web browser and any word processor, spreadsheet or presentation package which you might use in preparing course work.

Laptop or Desktop?

Most students prefer the convenience of laptops or notebooks over desktop computers. Wireless networking for access to Hunter and CUNY resources as well as the Internet is available to all registered Hunter students in many places on campus. Combined with a notebook computer this enables students to work and communicate all over the Hunter campus.

Wireless?

You should choose wireless Ethernet capability (often called WiFi or 802.11 networking) as part of the configuration when you buy your laptop if your budget allows. To use the existing systems choose at least 802.11g networking, and to take advantage of new network technology soon to be installed choose 802.11n. If you choose 802.11n networking make sure that the computer will also use 802.11g as well so that you can use the current wireless system as well as ones to come in the future.

Mac or PC?

If you are wondering whether to choose a Windows PC or Apple Macintosh, you are not limited in your choice by any of Hunter's systems. All of the systems used work equally well on Windows or the Mac.

Support

There is one vital factor you should take into account when buying a computer for use at college. Hunter does not provide software or hardware troubleshooting or repairs for student equipment, so it is essential that you provide yourself with support during your time at college. This means that you are very strongly advised to purchase the manufacturer's three-year warranty extension and any telephone support that is included in such a package. All reputable computer vendors offer such a product.

Software

CUNY provides certain software applications free or at a discount to students. These can be seen in the eMall section of the CUNY Portal. They include:

Symantec Anti-Virus for Windows or Macintosh (free)

Microsoft Office student licenses for Windows or Macintosh (low student price)

Other software and hardware deals are also available.

We shall shortly be providing a more detailed guide to acquiring and setting up software to make the best of Hunter's and CUNY's resources. Revisit this page to check for updates.

No matter what sort of phone, smartphone or PDA you have, setting up the mail is very similar in each case. The actual layout of the screens will vary from device to device but the information they all ask for is the same. They need to know the names of the servers used to send and receive mail, your email address, account name and password, and one other important fact.

On your device, go into the settings for email and look around until you find the area that holds the settings for the mail system’s servers. You may need to add a new account or profile to get to this area. There might also be a wizard, a setup process or an assistant that walks you through capturing these details. Once you’re there, here are the details you need. Note that the device may not request them in the same order that we give them here.

Email details

Incoming Mail Server type: If you are offered IMAP (or IMAP4) then choose that. If not, choose POP (or POP3). Do not choose Microsoft Exchange or HTTP.

Incoming mail server: ms1.hunter.cuny.edu

Outgoing mail (SMTP) server: smtp1.hunter.cuny.edu

User (or Account) Name: your Hunter NetID.

This is the same NetID you use to log onto email from your office or computer (using Eudora, Outlook, Webmail, Apple Mail or Thunderbird). If you do not remember your NetID you can check it by going to this web page and entering your details. You will be told your NetID, your short-form e-mail address, any e-mail aliases you migh have (such as firstname.lastname@hunter.cuny.edu) and the password you originally were issued.

E-mail address: you can use addresses of the form NetID@hunter.cuny.edu or alias@hunter.cuny.edu. In order to find out what your alias(es) might be, consult the e-mail lookup page.

Password: enter the password you normally use to log onto mail. If you have forgotten your password there are various steps you can take to remedy this:

If you have forgotten your password but have never changed it since your account was created, you can look it up using the e-mail lookup page.

If you have forgotten your password and you did change it at least once, contact the Help Desk in person with a photo ID to request a password reset.

Faculty and staff may make a phone request to have their password reset to the default value, which you can then find by using the e-mail lookup page.

Use Authentication for Outgoing mail: Say Yes. This is the important fact mentioned above and is the trickiest setting of all. It can go by many aliases, such as use password for sending mail, Authentication required for SMTP and so on. The common concept is that you are required to identify yourself to the outgoing mail server in question before it will accept outgoing mail from you. A lot of mail systems now require this to prevent relaying (abuse of mail systems to send spam mail) and Hunter is no exception.

When you say Yes to this setting you should be able to put your NetID and password into the device all over again, but this time it applies to sent mail, not received mail. Some devices make this easier for you by having a checkbox labeled something like Use same information as incoming mail - if this option is offered, use it. Otherwise enter the same information as you did for your incoming mail above. If you do not, or cannot, set this option, you will not be able to send mail with your mobile device using Hunter’s systems.

NB. There is another reason why you might not be able to send mail using your Hunter account using your mobile device, which has to do with relaying (mentioned above). Some carriers only allow you to use their own mail system to send mail. If this happens to you (for example if you get a message like “Prohibited due to relaying” when trying to send mail) contact your wireless carrier for assistance.

There may be other options you can set in the device in the same area, such as Use TLS or Use SSL - Hunter does not currently use these methods, so leave these areas alone.

(POP connections only) Leave mail on server: This option may be present or absent. If it’s present, consider how you want to use your mobile device. The POP3 method of fetching mail is the fastest and most efficient way of retrieving mail from your account over a wireless connection but it forces you to choose whether you should leave mail on the server, so that you will see the same messages again when you use your computer-based mail program, or to remove them from the server when you’ve read them, meaning that the only copy of the message you posses is the one on your device. We counsel setting your mobile device to leave mail on the server, and your computer mail program to remove messages from the server. This strikes the best balance between mobility and security.

When you’re done with setting up your mail, save all your settings and try to connect to Hunter and receive your mail. If that is successful, then try to send a mail message too.

What is this about?

This summer, for reasons of increased security and data protection, CUNY is adjusting eSIMS so that you must access it through the CUNY Portal, rather than logging in directly with your Social Security number and date of birth. However, this means that some of your CUNY Portal settings may affect your ability to use eSIMS. One of the most common issues is that you may have a different CUNY college listed as your "primary college"; then, when you log into eSIMS via the CUNY Portal, you will be taken into that college's registration process instead of Hunter's.

This can--in fact, will--happen if you take courses at more than one CUNY college. For instance, if you are taking courses both at Hunter and at Lehman, you will need to set your Primary College affiliation to Hunter to register for your Hunter classes, and then modify your Primary College affiliation to Lehman to register for your Lehman classes.

Another possible problem is if your "Primary CUNY Role" is not set to "student" within your CUNY Portal profile. This often happens if you are employed by a CUNY college, either as a staff member or as a teacher.

How do I know if I need these instructions?

If you log into eSIMS via the CUNY portal, and the blue bar at the top of the screen doesn't say "Hunter College" (it may list another college's name, or it may have no name at all), you will need to follow these instructions before you can use eSIMS.

Alternatively, if you log into eSIMS via the CUNY Portal and the "Registration" link does not appear in the left-hand menu bar, or it is there but you cannot click on it, you will need to follow these instructions before you can use eSIMS.

What do I do?

1. Log into the CUNY Portal with your Portal ID and password:

2. When you are logged in, click the link called "My Profile":

3. This will take you to your profile. Click "Modify" to make changes:

4. On the following page, the important thing to do is to change the "Primary College" pull-down menu so that it is set to "Hunter College", and the "Primary CUNY Role" pull-down menu so that it is set to "Student". (You can change other information if it's not correct, or leave it to another time.) Click the "Save" button when finished.

5. After you click the Save button, a pop-up window will appear, confirming that your changes will be saved. Click "OK" to continue:

6. When the pop-up goes away, click on "My Page" to go back to your Portal page:

7. Click on the eSIMS link to log into eSIMS and continue your registration for classes:

That's all! If you still have problems after this point, contact a peer advisor (if you are a first-year student in an orientation session) or the SNet Help Desk.

What sort of computers are being purchased for us? What are the specifications and configurations?

We are supplying one standard model of desktop and laptop in both Macintosh and PC families. Please refer to this page for the specifications.

Is it possible to have a different model or specification than the ones already selected?

Unfortunately not. We are only supplying the four standard machines at present, all of which are very powerful computers with every relevant feature. If you have a specific requirement that is not covered by the standard models, you will need to discuss it with your Department or the Provost’s Office.

Do the computers have wireless networking?

Yes. The Dell laptops have 802.11b/g wireless, and both Apple computers have 802.11 a/b/g/n.

What about software?

We will install MS Office 2007 (Windows) or 2008 (Macintosh) and Symantec Anti-Virus on each system. Additional software may be installed by special arrangement but may be delayed until the large number of standard installations are completed.

I have a laptop and a desktop, both of which are over four years old. Can both be replaced?

Using the resources available under the President’s program, we are only able to replace one machine per Faculty member. A second computer would have to be replaced using another funding method.

I want to use a laptop but I also need a large monitor for my work. Can I get one?

Because of the volume of the program, we can only replace computers at this time. If you wanted to get additional items covered with other Hunter or CUNY funds ICIT can help you get terrific prices, but we would not cover it under this program.

Can I get a new printer too?

When your computer is installed, the technician will check your printer (if you have one). If a new printer is needed we will install a standard Hewlett-Packard laser printer. If you have a printer that needs attention or servicing, the installing technician will help you book a repair call.

Can I give my old computer to someone in the Department or take it home?

No. All replaced computers will be collected by ICIT for refurbishment or recycling at the time that the new computer is installed.

Can I give my new computer to someone else in the department?

The President's program requires the computer to go to the faculty member. It may not be redistributed.

Can I get a second power supply for my new laptop? I use it at home and in the office and do not want to carry the power supply.

We will have extra power supplies available for people who need them.

Can I get an extra battery for my new laptop?

We are not distributing extra batteries. If there is a battery problem, we will have it replaced under the warranty.

How do I arrange for computer repair if it breaks?

Arrangements for repairs should be made through the ICIT Help Desk

May I use this computer for personal purposes?

CUNY policy requires that CUNY-owned computers be used for University instruction or business only.

What about my files?

The ICIT technician who installs the new computer will transfer documents and settings as usual.

Do I need to be present when my computer arrives?

Yes, please. ICIT will not install the new computer except in the presence of the faculty member for which it was purchased. ICIT will schedule the installation at a time convenient to you.

What is the PortalID?

The CUNY PortalID is a username and password combination that lets you access services hosted centrally at CUNY (as opposed to services hosted locally at Hunter, such as your e-mail). The CUNY services include:

Blackboard

eSIMS

DIG

ePermit

CUNY Alert

CUNY eMall

You cannot use your Hunter NetID to access any of these services; you must create a CUNY PortalID to use them. You'll pick your username and password, but Hunter strongly recommends that you use your Hunter NetID for your PortalID username, if it is not already in use by another member of the CUNY community. For example, if your Hunter NetID is "jsmith" (and therefore your Hunter e-mail address is "jsmith@hunter.cuny.edu"), we advise you to choose "jsmith" as your CUNY PortalID username as well. But, whatever you choose, you should remember it--you'll use it extensively throughout your time at CUNY!

Please note: If you are transferring from another CUNY college, it is very likely that you already have a PortalID! Do not try and create another. If you already created your CUNY Portal ID but don't remember your username, come to the Help Desk.

Getting a PortalID - The Summary

Go to www.cuny.edu , click on "Log-in", then "Register Now". Follow the instructions on each succeeding page.

Getting a PortalID - Step-by-Step

To create your PortalID, go to www.cuny.edu and click on the "Log-in" link at the bottom of the left-hand menu bar:

On the following page, click "Register":

On the following page, click "Student":

The following page will ask for your last name, your Social Security number, and your birthdate to validate you as a CUNY student:

On the next page, you'll just be asked to click "Confirm" if your information is correct.

On the following page, you will be asked to choose a username & password, and record what e-mail address will be associated with this PortalID. (ICIT strongly recommends that you use your Hunter NetID, if possible, as your PortalID username; and your Hunter e-mail address as your listed e-mail address.)

Once you have filled out the Username, Password, Password Confirmation, and Email blanks, just click the "Save" button and you're done! You will be able to use your PortalID immediately.

Your Hunter NetID

Many services in Hunter use your NetID. When you arrive at Hunter you are issued your NetID and an initial password automatically. You should change your password immediately, change it often after that, and change it immediately if you suspect somebody else knows your password.

Changing your password

Go to the SNet Webmail page and log in.

Click the button labeled Change Password.

In the small page that appears, fill out the form like this:

Field

Then click the button labeled OK. If you make a mistake and want to start over, click the button labeled Reset. If you don't want to change your password after all, just click Cancel.

Once you click OK, your password will be changed immediately. The next time you use SNet Mail, wireless or other Hunter NetID services, you will need to use the password you just chose.

Every student, staff or faculty member of Hunter College (with the exception of Continuing Ed) is issued a NetID to log into Hunter networked services, including email, Wireless networks, and the Library proxy server. The Hunter NetID is issued to you on commitment (students) or employment (faculty and staff) and contingent on continued registration or employment.

Please note that the Hunter NetID is NOT the same as the CUNY PortalID which is registered and maintained by CUNY systems. Go here for a list of which services use the NetID and which require the PortalID.

Students

Students will first encounter the Hunter NetID subsequent to either committing to Hunter or registration for classes, and the NetID is usually sent to the personal e-mail used during the admissions process. The student's NetID is also used for their Hunter e-mail address, and all official communications to the student will be done through that e-mail.

Faculty and Staff

Faculty and staff will receive their Hunter NetID subsequent to approval of hiring papers by a payroll authority such as Human Resources or Research Foundation. The NetID for faculty and staff is likewise used for their Hunter e-mail address, but full time staff and faculty (including adjuncts) will also have a long form e-mail address or alias, corresponding to the first and last name used in official hiring papers.

You will commonly encounter your Hunter NetID as the first part of the short form of your e-mail address: for example John Smith might have the short form e-mail address of

js147@hunter.cuny.edu

and a long form, or alias of

john.smith@hunter.cuny.edu

John Smith's Hunter NetID is therefore

js147

The rules governing Hunter NetID creation which guarantee uniqueness require that each be unique and none will be reused. This means that you cannot normally derive your NetID from your personal name. Instead, if you need to find out what your NetID is, go to the Hunter e-mail lookup page and fill out the form with your first and last names, Social Security number, and date of birth. This form is completely secure and no information is retained by the Web lookup system. Sensitive information is also masked by password-style characters when you enter it, so nobody else can see the data you are entering.

When you have entered the required data, press the Look-Up → button to reveal your Hunter NetID. Your NetID is given on the line beginning "Your Email username is:"

Also given on the page is your original Hunter NetID password, as it was on the day it was issued. The NetID and password credentials are used for e-mail and many other services which use NetID. If you have never changed your password from the one originally given to you, you should go do so at the next convenient moment.

Faculty and Staff

Follow the link on the page to Hunter Webmail, log in with your old password, and then click on Options in the sidebar. This will take you to the Password Change page, where you may select a new Hunter NetID password.

Students

Change your password via SNet Webmail. Read this page for full instructions.

This web-based service gives you private access to your
Hunter Student e-mail account. You can jump off from this page
to log on to your SNet Mail account on the web, where you
will be able to read and send mail, check your calendar and
address book, and use most of the features that are available
                  within Microsoft Outlook.

Some notes about Webmail:

Your password is like your toothbrush. Don't let anyone else use it, and change it every six months.

Remember to log out. Click on the "Logout" link--don't just close the browser window! Otherwise, the next person to use that computer or terminal might find themselves in your inbox.

Don't check that box. Most web browsers will ask if you want to save your password for future use. If you're on a shared or public computer, just say "no" to "Save this password?"

Click here to log into SNet Webmail

Forgotten your password?

Use this page to check the SNet password that was originally issued to you.

Other mail programs

Interested
in using other email programs instead of webmail? Instructions for setting this up can be found in Setting
                          Up Outlook Express* or Setting
Up Eudora. (Other mail clients should also be compatible.)

*Note:
If you use the full Outlook client and you have configured it
to manage mail or addresses on your own computer system (with
"Personal Folders" or "Personal Address Book"),
then those items will not be viewable with this Web Access client.
You can only see those items using Outlook on your own desktop

About OneCard

OneCard is a system that lets you use your Hunter ID card for campus services, such as printing, copying, dining, vending machines, and library fees.

You can put money on your card and check your account balance through the OneCard web site, or at any of the Account Management Centers (AMC) around campus. (Click here for a list of locations.)

Tax-Free Dining

When you use your OneCard in the Hunter cafeteria, no tax is charged on your purchases. (To take advantage of this feature, you must first activate your Dining Account via the OneCard web site.)

Flex Account Features

Most other services you pay for on your OneCard are taken from your "Flex Account".

Printing & Copying:

The publicly-available printers and copiers in the Library and in the PCS computer labs cost 5 cents per page for black-and-white, 15 cents per page for color. These services can ONLY be paid for via OneCard; cash is not accepted.

Vending Machines:

There are snack and beverage machines on the 2nd floor of the West Building and the 3rd floor of the North Building that will accept your OneCard as payment. (More machines coming soon!)

Library Fees:

You can pay for any library late fees with your OneCard. Simply present it at the circulation desk.

Dorm Laundry:

If you live in the Brookdale dorms, you can now use your OneCard with the laundry machines.

Book Voucher Program

Those students who participate in the book voucher program will have an additional account on their OneCard, for a total amount determined by their financial aid package. When participants purchase books and school supplies from the Hunter College Bookstore, they can pay some or all of the cost from the Book Voucher account on their OneCard. (If you are unsure of your eligibility, contact the Office of Financial Aid.)

How do I register?

The application you use to register for classes at Hunter College is called "eSIMS". You access eSIMS by logging into the CUNY Portal.

How do I log into the CUNY Portal?

You can reach the CUNY Portal by going to www.cuny.edu and clicking the "Log-in" link on the lower left-hand side of the page. If you haven't yet activated your CUNY Portal ID, we have step-by-step instructions on how to do that.

Please note: If you have only just been admitted to the College, you may not be able to activate your Portal ID for 24 hours, as the systems will not have the same data. If the CUNY Portal does not recognize your identifying information, please wait until noon the following day to try to activate your Portal ID.

Once you have logged into the Portal, you'll see a link for "eSIMS" (click to see screenshot). Click on that link to access eSIMS and register for classes.

I can log into the Portal, and I can go to eSIMS, but I can't register for classes!

CUNY's systems may have you associated with a college other than Hunter, or in a non-student role. You need to check your CUNY Portal Profile to make sure your settings are correct. We have step-by-step instructions on how to do that.

I have been getting correspondence from Hunter and/or CUNY, but my name/date of birth/personal information in it is wrong.

This will not prevent you from registering. If you know the right "wrong" information--for instance, if your last name is "Smith" and your correspondence is being sent to "Mr./Ms. Smithee"--use the incorrect information to log in for the time being just so you can register for classes. Once you're done registering, go to the Registrar's Office in Rm. 217 North to get your records corrected.

Exception: If you have a Social Security Number mismatch, come to the Help Desk in Rm. 109 North to resolve the problem.

Welcome
                  to SNet Webmail.
This web-based service gives you private access to your
Hunter Student e-mail account. You can jump off from this page
to log on to your SNet Mail account on the web, where you
will be able to read and send mail, check your calendar and
address book, and use most of the features that are available
                  within Microsoft Outlook.

Click
the "Log On" button, then enter the SNet ID
and password that was mailed to you, and connect to
your personal e-mail account. In some browsers in the
dialog box there is also an optional check box for saving
your password. Do not check this box on systems other
than your own -- otherwise you will have just left behind
a non-password protected access link to your e-mail
                          account.

If

another e-mail address. If you are using IE 5.0 or later
on a PC running Windows, log onto SNet Webmail and you will

redirecting will be available soon. In the meantime,
use the Public Access Computers or go to the Student
Helpdesk in Rm. 109N to request redirecting of e-mail.

TROUBLESHOOTING/FAQ

Q: What is my user name and password?
A: Use your Hunter NetID and password. What is my Hunter NetID?

Q: I don't have a Hunter e-mail account, or I don't remember it. How do I get it?
A: Look up your Hunter NetID and original password. If you have changed your password and then forgotten it, come to room 109 North with a valid photo ID to have it reset.

Q: I am getting an invalid username and password error? What do I do?
A: It means you entered either your username or password incorrectly. Please try again.

Q: My login information works for e-mail but not for wireless!
A: Please come to room 109 North for further help.

Q: What network do I use?
A: Choose "hunternet" when connecting to a wireless network. Any network names you see other than "hunternet" are private networks that belong to other people. You must not use these, even if you are able to join them - it is at the very least inconsiderate and could under certain circumstances be treated as a crime.

Q: Where are the hotspots (the wireless locations) of hunternet?
A: Look at the list at the top of this page

Q: I do not see a list of wireless networks from my computer!
A: Make sure your wireless device is turned on. Please refer to your computer's manual on how to turn the wireless device on. After it is on, refresh the list of wireless networks, and try to connect.

Q: I see hunternet but I can't connect to it, or my connection drops!
A: Please move closer to one of the locations mentioned at the top of this page.

Q: Is it safe to use non-Hunter networks?
A: While you may be able to use other networks, it is NOT recommended. Not only is it bad for the owner of that network, it could also expose your computer to attack if the owner doesn't run their network carefully.

Q: Can others see my activities in a non-Hunter network?
A: Yes. Various kinds of activities could be monitored, and thus we urge you only to use "hunternet" wherever it is available.

Q: What browsers can I use?
A: Any of them! You can use Internet Explorer, Opera, Firefox, Safari, Camino, or any other browser of your choice.

Q: How do I logout from wireless?
A: You will automatically be logged out after 5 minutes of inactivity. If you did not get the popup logout box, you can click on, or type, the following URL to manually log out:
https://securelogin.arubanetworks.com/cgi-bin/login?cmd=logout

ADVANCED TROUBLESHOOTING :

Windows

Proper Installation of Wireless Adapter

Go to start>run, type ncpa.cpl, then press Enter, and there should be a wireless device listed. If it is disabled, right click and enable it. If your device is not listed, got to start>run and type devmgmt.msc, then press Enter. Seeing a yellow exclamation mark (!) means you will need a driver for your device. It can be downloaded from manufacturers website or the installation CD it came with.

    Connected but not working:

Go to start>run>cmd, press Enter, then type ipconfig/all and press Enter. In the list, your IP address should be like this:

146.95.<number>.<number>

Leave the command line open and try using your browser. If it is not working, execute the following commands, one at a time.

    ipconfig /release (press Enter)

    ipconfig /renew (press Enter)

    ipconfig /flushdns (press Enter)

    ipconfig /registerdns (press Enter)

And then try again with your browser. If it still does not work, execute the following command:

netsh interface ip set address "Wireless Network Connection" dhcp (press Enter)

netsh interface ip set dns "Wireless Network Connection" dhcp (press Enter)

If this fails too, you can uninstall and reinstall the device. From devmgmt.msc, right click on the device, and uninstall it. Restart your computer and have proper installation CD or drivers ready. Ask your vendor or manufacturer for further help.

Macintosh

   * How do I view and connect to the Hunter wireless network?

Look in the menu bar for the AirPort icon. Click on it once to view the wireless networks available and choose hunternet to connect.

* I don't see an AirPort icon in my menu bar!

Open System Preferences > Network > Show: AirPort > AirPort Tab and then look at the bottom of the preference pane. Make sure there is a check mark in the box Show AirPort status in menu bar. If there isn't a check mark there already, click the box once to check it. Then close the Network preference pane.

* I am connected to " hunternet" but I can't use the internet!

Try the following things:

Open System Preferences > Network > Show: AirPort and click the Proxies tab. If any of the entries in the list to the left hand side (headed Select a proxy server to configure:) has a check mark in the box to its left, click the box once to remove the check mark. Then click Apply Now.

In the same preference pane, click the TCP/IP tab. Just under the tab bar, you will see a drop-down labeled Configure IPv4:. Make sure that the drop-down is set to Using DHCP. Find the button on the right hand side labeled Renew DHCP Lease and click it once. Then click Apply Now.

Turn the AirPort off and on again - click the AirPort icon and choose Turn AirPort off and then click it again and choose Turn AirPort on.
